Forum FAQs - The forum explained..............

Site FAQs

1. What is a guestbook?

A guestbook is a board or a forum that lets you post your comments about the site. If you like it, hate it, have some suggestions, etc, a guestbook is the place to let it all out. Be assured that we would love to have you people sign our guestbook.

2. My browser says that it stopped the site from showing ActiveX content that could access my computer................Is this a virus?

Not at all. You see the background MIDI file that is playing is actually an ActiveX control and in computers with SP2 this is recognized as "harmful."

3. Music? What music? I don't hear any?

This is probably because you are using Mozilla Firefox. For reasons we have not been able to determine yet the MIDI file just does not play in Firefox. Oh well.................

4. I have more questions.................

And we have more answers (at least we hope so). Feel free to contact us at the addresses provided in the Contact Us page. We promise to reply ASAP.

Group FAQs

1. How can I edit my profile in the group?

Click on <Members> in the left frame of the group. Then find your name in the member list in the following page and click on your Yahoo! ID. Click on "Edit Profile Information" and do the necessary changes, save them and you are home free.

2. I would be giving my personal details..............Isn't that risky?

Well we cannot discount the possibility that the information can be used in a harmful manner but then every time you step out on a road you risk getting run over or struck down by a lightning bolt. The possibility is remote to say the least.

3. But even if I can understand that, why are you displaying the details to non-members too?

That is so that your friends can know that you are present in the group and contact you. From the members section all the non-members can know is that you are a part of this group. Anything else they know can be known from the Yahoo directory itself.

4. What if the members I don't know harass me?

We are proud to say that till date no such incidents have occurred. Though that is no guarantee that this might not happen in future, rest assured that any such incidents will be dealt with in the STRICTEST possible manner.

5. Why do I have to give a detailed introduction?

Refer to the Forum FAQs section for this.

6. Why doesn't the Chat work?

You probably have JavaScript disabled or if you are running WinXP there is no JVM (Java Virtual Machine) installed. Try enabling JavaScript from IE Tools>Options>Security>Custom Level. In case of WinXP try installing the Java Runtime environment from Sun Microsystems.

7. I use my profile for chatting. I can't divulge my personal details in that.

We agree. And that is why Yahoo gives you the option of creating a separate profile. Access your profile as described above, then go to "Edit Profile Information." Now Click on "My Profiles" in the top right, then "Create A New Public Profile." Now you decide which to use for chatting and which to use in the group, and accordingly give as much or as little info as you like.

8. Why can't I post music files in the files section?

You can post music files in the files section as long as they are not copyrighted. Now it is common knowledge that almost all mp3s out there are illegally downloaded. So.......................(you don't want to see this site pulled down do you?)

Forum FAQs

1. How do I get in?

You need to register for that. Click on register and follow the instructions to do this. Validate your account by clicking on the e-mail that has been sent to you. Sometimes this gets sent to the junk mails folder. So check there too if you do not find the e-mail in your inbox.

2. Why do I have to give a detailed introduction?

This is so that the people at the forum can get to know you as a person. Surely you cannot make friends with a complete stranger. Moreover by providing a complete introduction, we decrease the chances of potential troublemakers and impostors within the group. Think of it as a security feature. A complete introduction with your likes & dislikes, hobbies etc, might just find you an unlikely friend with similar interests.

3. Why does it say "............chosen to require validation for all email addresses............?"

For obvious security reasons we have decided to choose our members personally. The screening process is very swift and you will usually get the validation e-mail within the next couple of hours or so. Follow the instructions contained within.

4. How do I keep my username from appearing in the online user list?

Check the "Don't add me to the active users list" box while logging in.

5. I registered but I cannot Log In.

Check that you have entered the correct username/password. If you were sent an activation/validation e-mail then follow the instructions contained within to activate your account. If nothing else works try contacting the board administrators.

6. How do I change my settings?

Click on "My Controls" on the top right. Here's a short tutorial on the functions :

a> The "Messenger" section deals with PMs (Private Messages) sent to you by other users. You can also reply to these from here.

b> The "Subscriptions" section deals with.................subscriptions. If you have decided to track a topic, (accessed from the top right of a topic window) then this is where it is shown. You can also unsubscribe from selected topics here. In plain English, this means that if you were interested in a certain topic, you could track it, and it would show you all the latest developments here.

c> The "Personal Profile" section deals with your appearance in the forum. Here you can change your avatar (the picture that appears beside your posts), your signature (the catch line beneath your posts), and your general profile info.

d> The options section deals with miscellaneous settings. The E-mail settings are self-explanatory. The Board settings affect how the forum looks to you. Adjust your time zone to correct the time displayed to you in the forum. If it still appears an hour or so off, then check/uncheck the daylight savings box. The other options are self-explanatory. After you have finished editing click change my account options for the changes to take effect.

7. Why cannot I upload my custom avatar/my avatar has been scaled down?

Due to a space constraint we only allow avatars less than 25Kb and of dimensions less than 125*150. Avatars bigger than this get automatically scaled down. If your avatar is not being accepted, check if the file type is supported or not.

8. How can I change my rank?

Your rank is a measure of your post count and as such cannot be changed. The admins and mods have special ranks and also the power to change an user rank if necessary. Please do not abuse the board by posting unnecessarily to simply increase your post count. This is your forum. Take care of it.

9. How do I post a topic?

Easy. Click on the "New Topic" link at the to right of a page.

10. Can I edit/delete a post?

You can only edit/delete your own posts. However you cannot delete a post if someone has already replied to it. Only moderators and administrators can edit/delete all posts.

11. How do I create a poll?

Once again, easy. Use the "New Poll" link at the top right. Give the topic title and description, followed by the question and the choices (one per line).

12. Why cannot I vote in polls?

Only registered users can vote in polls so as to avoid spoofing of the results. Please log in with your username and password to vote.

13. What is BBCode?

BBCode is a special interpretation of HTML. It is a lot simpler and user-friendly. Moreover this is the language we use to enhance posts in this forum.

14. Why can't I use HTML?

There are a few inherent dangers of using HTML, the foremost being abuse of the board by using tags which may destroy the layout or cause other problems. Hence as a safety feature HTML has been disabled in this forum.

15. How do I use BBCode/How do I enhance my posts/What is a tag?

The following short tutorial is by no means exhaustive but we hope that it will give you a more or less comprehensive instruction set on using BBCode.

a> In BBCode the main feature is tags. A tag is a command that tells the software what to do with the text that follows after it. As is evident there must be a starting point and hence an ending point (..................everything that has a beginning, has an end...............). A tag is always enclosed within square brackets. It looks somewhat like this :

[command]<insert text here>[/command]

As you can probably make out, the [command] is the starting point and the [/command] is the end. Insert the text without the "<>." A list of commands and actions follow :

Command                                      Action

B                                                   Bold Text

I                                                   Italicize Text

U                                                  Underline Text

QUOTE                                       Quote Text

FONT=****                                 Choose the font. Replace **** with the font name

SIZE=**                                     Choose font size. Replace ** with desired number

COLOR=***                                Choose font color. Replace *** with desired color

For example in order to quote "to be or not to be" the format should be like this:

[QUOTE]to be or not to be[/QUOTE]

This will give you a white box with the quoted words inside it in your post. Similarly, if you want to write in the Arial font, of size 7, and color red,

[Font=Arial][Size=7][COLOR=Red]Hi there.[/FONT][/SIZE][/COLOR]

This will display : Hi there.

As you can see the tags can be used in conjunction with each other. There is no limit as to how many tags you can use in this fashion, but DO NOT forget to close them at the end.

The other functions are entering a hyperlink or an e-mail address or maybe an image on a remote server.

1. Hyperlink : [URL=<insert url here>]<Title of the Webpage>[/URL]

E.g. If you want to leave a link to say Yahoo,

[URL=http://www.Yahoo.com] Yahoo[/URL]

will give you Yahoo

2. E-mail : [EMAIL]<enter address here>[/EMAIL]

E.g. If you want to input your address at MSN.com,

[EMAIL]me@msn.com[/EMAIL] will give you me@msn.com.

3. Image : [IMG]<enter address of image server>[/IMG]

E.g. If you want to post Snoopy.jpg at image.com,

[IMG]http://www.image.com/snoopy.jpg[/IMG] will give you an image of Snoopy IN your post. Note that this is NOT the same as an avatar.

16. Why cannot I upload an image from my own computer?

Sorry but we only allow images stored on servers that can be accessed by the public. This is again due to the space crunch. The same applies for servers protected by a password.

17. What are announcements?

Announcements are important information posted by the moderators and administrators, and appear at the top of the forum in which they are posted. You should read an announcement as soon as it is posted.

18. What are locked topics?

An administrator or a moderator can forbid posting in a topic, thereby locking it. Any polls within the topic are automatically ended.

19. What are moderators?

Moderators are people assigned by the administrators to  to prevent people from going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material. They have the power to delete or modify posts.

20. How do I become a moderator?

We choose our moderators based on their dedication to FriendzForLife and how sensibly that person can moderate. Be a responsible user and who knows, before long, you could be considered for being a moderator.

21. Whom do I contact if something goes wrong?

See the Contact Us page for this. You can contact either the admins or the mods for any difficulties regarding the site or the group or the forum. For any legal enquiries please contact the ADMINISTRATORS in the e-mail address provided in the Contact Us page.

That's all for now. Keep checking though for additional updates to this FAQ. All updates will be listed in the What's New page.
